Dr. Prochi Madon

  • Ph.D. in Applied Biology (1979) from Mumbai University.
  • Trained in Genetics at B.J. Medical College, Pune (1973).
  • Set-up and headed one of the first cytogenetic laboratories in India at Grant Medical College and Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals (1974-1978).
  • Awarded the Lady Tata Memorial Trust scholarship for 3 years.
  • Won the Young Scientist Award in cytogenetics (1980) instituted by the Indian Society of Human Genetics.
  • Set-up a Cytogenetic laboratory at SSG Hospital, Baroda (1979).
  • Research Officer at IRR (ICMR) and Genetic Research Centre (ICMR) at B.J. Wadia Hospital for children.
  • Set-up and heads the Genetics and PGD laboratory in the Dept. of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics at Jaslok Hospital since 1999.
  • Instrumental in introducing FISH (fluorescence in-situ hybridization) as a useful, affordable genetic diagnostic test in India for a wide variety of conditions ranging from infertility to cancer.
  • Trained in PGD at St. Barnabas Medical Centre (New Jersey) under Dr. Santiago Munne, at SISMER (Italy) under Dr. Luca Gianaroli and at University College London, under Dr. Joy Delhanty and Dr. Joyce Harper.
  • Underwent training in cytogenetics at Fox Chase Cancer Centre (Philadelphia), Magee Women’s Hospital (Pittsburgh), Genzyme Genetics (New York and Santa Fe), Stanford Medical Centre (California) and Hammersmith Hospital (London).
  • Has participated in over 100 national and international conferences.
  • Author of more than 50 scientific publications, some of which have appeared in leading international journals.
  • Invited speaker for lectures in Genetics.
  • Guide for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students of Mumbai University.
  • Elected to the prestigious ISCN (International System of Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature) Committee (2006) and is the representative of Asia.
